Here’s  a question that sometimes arises when previewing an email: Why doesn’t the rendering from Email on Acid match what’s on my live device? This is a great question, and there isn’t always a simple answer. Many variables go into the process of generating the previews. When the renderings don’t match the live device, these are the most common explanations:

  • The device version, operating system, and/or application being viewed is different than the device version Email on Acid is using. To check, click here to view our current clients. This happens because different systems and versions have different ways of viewing code.
  • Variant screen resolutions, scaling, and zoom. Depending on how an email is coded, the way a screen’s scaling and resolution is set could break apart/alter images and the email. Email on Acid sets our screens to 100% scaling and 100% zoom so that emails do not get altered by magnification settings. Different screen resolutions and sizes can also influence how an email renders.
  • The email is taking too long to load, causing a screenshot capture prior to the full email loading. When this happens, you may see duplications, missing tables, cutoffs, misalignments, or no preview at all. To learn more about how the HTML size, image sizes and pixel height may impact your previews click here.

If you have checked these, but you still are seeing a difference, let us know. Email helpdesk@emailonacid.com and our team will help.

Sometimes issues with previews can be explained by the HTML size, image size, or the pixel height for a project. These impact the time it takes for your email to load, and in return Email on Acid is unable to get a true snapshot of your email. You may see distorted images, partial preview returns, or no previews returned. This also means the email will take more time to load than most of your readers are willing to wait, and you may lose engagement in your campaign.

HTML Size

Best practice is to keep your HTML size below 102KB. If your email size goes above this, you may begin to see issues with the speed your email is loading, and this could cause Email on Acid to return no previews for your test. Visit our blog to learn more about the impact of file sizes on email.

Image Size

Best practice is to have images under 200 KB. A simple way to check for this is to run the email through Campaign Precheck. If any images are large enough to slow down your email loading speed, you will get a warning message and can optimize the image.

Pixel Height

Best practice is to limit pixel height of the entire email to no larger than 5000 to 7000 pixels. Most web clients have pixel height limit of 7000, and some desktop and mobile clients have a pixel height limit of 5000. If an email is longer than this, it may get cut off at the footer or disclaimer. It could also render fully, but take an extended time to load, hurting reader engagement.

In Campaign Precheck we provide a tool to check that links in your HTML properly validate. It can read links in your HTML, or links that have been uploaded from a spreadsheet.

To check links using a URL spreadsheet:

1. Ensure your Excel sheet is properly formatted:

  • Place “URL” in the header of the column that contains your links
  • Place the destination URL directly in the next column
  • Make sure all links are in the same order on the spreadsheet as in the HTML
  • Save in .csv, .xlsx or .xls format

2. Click Yes-Please Upload

3. Click Browse

4. Select the file, and click Upload

If your spreadsheet is formatted correctly, the Next button at the bottom of the screen will turn solid. Click Next to proceed with link validation. Click here to learn more about how to use the URL validation tool.

If there are no headings in the excel sheet for the URL, the page will not allow you to proceed. Make sure to double check that your column heading says URL.

If you click Next, but then receive an error that the URL in email does not match URL in spreadsheet, this means the links in the spreadsheet are not in the same order as in the HTML. Reformulate your spreadsheet and begin the process again.

Campaign Precheck includes a great feature for  collaborating on email testing projects. Once previews are generated, a share link can be created to allow for collaboration and commenting from all types of collaborators, including those without Email on Acid accounts. When comments are left, the account owner who created the share link will receive a communication that shows the feedback, who left it, and when.

To get started on collaboration, first either access your Campaign Precheck project from the Projects page, or start a new project. Click here to learn how to start a Campaign Precheck project. Navigate to the Email Previews step, and create a share link to your project. To learn how to create a share link, click here

The creator of the project, or any recipient of the share link, can now begin collaboration by clicking into any client preview. On the left, the preview can be given a thumbs up or a thumbs down. At the top, the collaborator can click on Add Comments.

Clicking anywhere on the preview will mark that spot for a comment, and a text box will appear to post the comment. Once a comment is entered, simply click Add Comment.

When comments are added, the project owner can go back into the project via the email received to notify of the comment, or directly through the project page. Any preview that has a comment will show a comment bubble, with the number of comments for that specific preview.

The project owner can click into the preview indicated, click on View Comments, and can then go through each of the comments. They can also reply to the commenter to keep a full history of changes.

If you are not currently a Professional or Enterprise account, click here to learn how to upgrade to get access to this feature.

Having blocklisted domains in the content of your email can hinder its ability to reach your subscriber’s inbox. Precheck will test each URL in your email across four popular vendors ensuring that your links are clean.

If your email passes the domain check you will see a green checkmark that says “Congrats, none of your domains are blocklisted!” If you see this you are good to go, and click Next to proceed to the next step of the Campaign Precheck.

If you have a blocklisted domain, you will see a red x stating “Some of your domains are blacklisted”, and see some details to the right of which was blocked.

If this happens, click the Details box to see more details on reasons for the domain blocking.

Note: For more information on blocklisting visit our blog article “A Beginners Guide to Blocklisting“.

Once finished, click Next to move onto the next step within Campaign Precheck deliverability features.

It is important to spam check every email due to ever-changing algorithms that may inadvertently cause your messages to hit the spam folder instead of the inbox. Our test looks at the content of your email that may cause spam delivery such as:

  • Blacklisted URLs in the email or its content.
  • Misleading subject lines. Very image-heavy email content.
  • Spelling and grammar issues.
  • Missing unsubscribe link in the footer.
  • Spam trigger words, subject line (too long or too short), or a sender email address that has been blacklisted

To start the Spam Test, check that the subject line appears as intended. Then click Run Spam Test. (Please allow time for the results to populate as it can take up to 30 seconds to display)

Once the spam test is complete, you will see the results on the right side of the screen. You will be able to see B2B, B2C, and Overall success summarized in the graphs at the top.

You can click Expand to see your results, which may be any of three different categories:

Note: If you ran a domain blocklist validation test and any of your domains were blocklisted, you will see an alert in this screen. You may work to resolve the issue, or you may move forward with a spam test.

When you are finished with the spam check, click Next to go to the summary for your entire Campaign Precheck project.

The next step of Campaign Precheck will review spelling and allow you to correct mistakes in your email title, inbox display, preheader text, alt text, and body copy. Spell Check also identifies words that may be offensive.

We currently offer Spell Check in North American English, but you may click on Other Language to leave feedback for us on what other languages we should consider supporting in the future. To begin the process, click on English (USA).

The Spell Check process is summarized on the left side of the screen, and your email will render on the right. Each potential spelling correction is highlighted in red, and below will be suggested words. Click on the suggested words to correct the error, and then click Change. If the word is correct, you can click Ignore .

If Spell Check  identifies a word that may be spelled correctly, but is a potential profanity , we will notify you with a yellow warning symbol. You can type the correct word in the Body Element box and click Change. If the word was intentional, you can click Ignore.

Note: The Spell Check feature  locates hidden misspellings, such as errors in alt-text and preheader text.

When you see “Congrats! Your Spell Check is complete!”, you can click Next to continue with the Campaign Precheck flow, which if following our default flow will be Domain Blacklist.
