Here’s  a question that sometimes arises when previewing an email: Why doesn’t the rendering from Email on Acid match what’s on my live device? This is a great question, and there isn’t always a simple answer. Many variables go into the process of generating the previews. When the renderings don’t match the live device, these are the most common explanations:

  • The device version, operating system, and/or application being viewed is different than the device version Email on Acid is using. To check, click here to view our current clients. This happens because different systems and versions have different ways of viewing code.
  • Variant screen resolutions, scaling, and zoom. Depending on how an email is coded, the way a screen’s scaling and resolution is set could break apart/alter images and the email. Email on Acid sets our screens to 100% scaling and 100% zoom so that emails do not get altered by magnification settings. Different screen resolutions and sizes can also influence how an email renders.
  • The email is taking too long to load, causing a screenshot capture prior to the full email loading. When this happens, you may see duplications, missing tables, cutoffs, misalignments, or no preview at all. To learn more about how the HTML size, image sizes and pixel height may impact your previews click here.

If you have checked these, but you still are seeing a difference, let us know. Email helpdesk@emailonacid.com and our team will help.

Sometimes issues with previews can be explained by the HTML size, image size, or the pixel height for a project. These impact the time it takes for your email to load, and in return Email on Acid is unable to get a true snapshot of your email. You may see distorted images, partial preview returns, or no previews returned. This also means the email will take more time to load than most of your readers are willing to wait, and you may lose engagement in your campaign.

HTML Size

Best practice is to keep your HTML size below 102KB. If your email size goes above this, you may begin to see issues with the speed your email is loading, and this could cause Email on Acid to return no previews for your test. Visit our blog to learn more about the impact of file sizes on email.

Image Size

Best practice is to have images under 200 KB. A simple way to check for this is to run the email through Campaign Precheck. If any images are large enough to slow down your email loading speed, you will get a warning message and can optimize the image.

Pixel Height

Best practice is to limit pixel height of the entire email to no larger than 5000 to 7000 pixels. Most web clients have pixel height limit of 7000, and some desktop and mobile clients have a pixel height limit of 5000. If an email is longer than this, it may get cut off at the footer or disclaimer. It could also render fully, but take an extended time to load, hurting reader engagement.

Although we previously offered email previews on the webmail clients AOL, Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo on Firefox and Chrome for Mac OSX 10.10, there was no significant difference between these and the same clients and browsers on Windows 7.

By retiring these unnecessary previews, we’re able to devote more resources to adding new previews and improving the performance of existing ones.

By default, your Email on Acid account is set up to display previews of all client profiles for mobile, desktop and webmail. If there are client previews you do not commonly use, you may create a custom email client testing profile to make your review process more efficient.

To create a new custom email client testing profile:

1. Hover over your account name in the upper right-hand corner, click the drop-down arrow next to your account name and select Email Testing under Test Settings from the list.

2. All clients will be selected with a blue and white check mark. Click the checkbox to add or remove clients in your custom testing profile.

3. Once you’ve selected all the clients you’d like in your profile, click the plus button in the upper right-hand corner.

4. A box will appear to complete the custom profile creation. Create a Name for your profile and a Name Abbreviation. Then click Add.

Note: The Name Abbreviation is used for our Auto Inbox Process which is used to send your test code from your ESP to our system. Once sent, the project appears in your Projects area of Email on Acid. For more information on this process view our How Do I Use the Email on Acid Inbox? article.

5. If you would like this to be the default profile for all projects, click the radial box in front of Set as Default profile.

When we release new clients, you will be notified and need to update your custom client settings if you would like them to be included. To edit a current Email Client Testing Profile:

1. Choose your desired client profile from the drop down

2. Click the box next to the client you would like to add, or uncheck for clients you would like to remove

3. Click Save

Frequently Asked Questions & Troubleshooting Steps

Will all account users be able to use the custom profile for their projects?
Custom profiles do not become usable by other users. Each user will need to setup their own custom profile.

Does the custom profile automatically become used for projects sent from my ESP once I select default?
To use the custom profile to send code from your ESP to Email on Acid you will need to obtain the new email address associated with the custom profile. This can be located when starting a new Email Testing project by clicking on the word here in “Don’t have the email HTML? Click here to send us an email.”

We send your email through each email client application and stitch together a screen capture of the final result. Using this technique, your email is sent to each individual email client as soon as you submit an email for testing. From there, test results will return in the order that they are received and processed.

Screen captures are displayed as one large JPG image so you will not be able to click on or test outside links, nor can you preview animated gif images. Instead, check your links with our URL validation feature.

We do not use code-based simulations.

How to Use Email Testing for Manual and Auto-Process Tests https://www.emailonacid.com/help-article/how-to-use-email-testing/ Tue, 29 Sep 2015 03:24:36 +0000 https://eoacomdev2.local/help_article/how-to-use-email-testing/

Our recommended method for generating email previews is our Campaign Precheck tool. With this option, you can confirm that your email meets accessibility requirements, the images are properly formatted, the URLs are valid, and more. Using Campaign Precheck results in the best campaign possible. We do offer another manual tool, Email Testing, if you need to run a quick set of previews. You can start a manual test, or send your test from your email service provider (ESP) to your Email on Acid projects.

Running a Manual Test

If you have your code available in a URL, a ZIP file, or you want to copy and paste from a document you can run a manual test by following these steps:

1. Click on Email & Spam Testing on the navigation bar.

2. Click Email & Spam and click Next.

3. Enter the URL, copy and paste your HTML, or browse for and upload your ZIP file.

4. Your test will default to All Previews, but if you have created a custom client profile you can choose it from the dropdown list. Learn how to build a custom client profile

5. Enter the Subject Line and click Next.

6. Select the preferred method to send the spam test if you would like to include a spam test with your previews. Learn more about how to complete the spam test in the Email on Acid platform.

7. Click Run Test.

Run a Test From ESP

You can also send your project from your ESP to your Email On Acid projects page, and this is highly recommended to check if your ESP is changing anything in your code upon send.

To find the email address to send to:

1. Click on Email & Spam Testing on the navigation bar.

2. Click Email & Spam and click Next.

3. The email address you will use to send from your ESP to Email on Acid will be displayed. If you have a custom client list it will have a unique email address assigned, and you can locate this by clicking on the dropdown Email Client Profile.

4. Send the email from your ESP, and then click on Projects on the navigation bar to locate and review your project.

Some best practices for sending from an ESP include:

  • Never forward an email to this address. This will result in potential issues with previews.
  • Do not send more than one email at the same time. This can cause previews to not load correctly. Send each email at least 1 second apart.

Results

You will have 2 or 3 result tabs, depending on whether you chose to run a Spam test. There are tabs for Email Test Summary, Deliverability, and URL Validation.

Email Summary Tab

Your previews will be displayed here, and you can click through them to verify that each one displays as you intend. You can change the thumbnail view by clicking the dropdown.

You can share your test results with others for review. To learn more about sharing your results, click here.

Under Tools you will see:

  • Inline CSS
Applies unique styles to a single element in your code
  • Text Only Version
Displays the email in text only
  • Preview HTML
Shows the HTML code, but does not allow for editing
  • Download
Select the previews you would like and create a zip file

Deliverability

If you ran spam test with the previews, you will see your results here. Spam results can take time to return, so please allow up to 10 minutes. To learn more about spam testing and results follow these resources:

If your results don’t return, or you have further questions, send your share link to helpdesk@emailonacid.com and our support team will help!

URL Validation

URL validation will check each URL and let you know if there are any issues accessing the links. If you receive an error, check the link to make sure it is working prior to sending your campaign.
